EVE Online Dev Rebranded to Escape Chinese Communist Party

CCP Games, the Icelandic developer behind the acclaimed space MMO EVE Online, has been reacquired by CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson in a $120 million cash-and-crypto transaction, ending a decade-long ownership period under Pearl Abyss. The studio has regained its independence after being purchased by the South Korean publisher for significantly more than the recent buyout price.

Following the acquisition, CCP Games has rebranded to Fenris Creations. According to Pétursson, the name change was motivated by a practical concern: the company’s previous acronym “CCP” conflicts with the Chinese Communist Party, also known by the same abbreviation. To avoid potential confusion and possible complications, the studio opted for a complete rebrand rather than risk ongoing complications with the similarly-named political organization.

The separation from Pearl Abyss was reportedly amicable, representing a strategic shift toward operational independence. CCP Games, founded in 1997 in Reykjavik, has approximately 150 employees and is best known for EVE Online, a complex player-versus-player space MMO renowned for generating compelling stories of large-scale intrigue and conflict. The rebrand marks a significant moment as the studio moves forward under CEO leadership with renewed autonomy over its operations and direction.
