Why isn’t Goro in Mortal Kombat 2?

The Mortal Kombat franchise continues with its latest film sequel, Mortal Kombat 2, which maintains the series’ commitment to the signature Fatalities that audiences expect from any MK adaptation. Fatalities—the gruesome finishing moves where enhanced fighters eliminate opponents in increasingly sadistic ways—have been central to the Mortal Kombat identity since the games’ debut. These ultraviolent spectacles became so controversial that they sparked congressional hearings in the 1990s and contributed to the establishment of the video game ratings system that remains in use today.

However, despite Goro’s prominent role in both the 1995 original film and the 2021 reboot directed by Simon McQuoid, the half-human, half-dragon Prince of the Shokan is notably absent from Mortal Kombat 2. Goro’s memorable appearance in the 1995 film was achieved through impressive animatronics and the work of over a dozen puppeteers, making his presence a beloved part of the franchise’s cinematic history. His return in the 2021 film cemented his status as an essential character for film adaptations of the property.

The character’s absence from the sequel raises questions about creative choices and character management in the new film. While the exact reasons for his exclusion remain unclear from the initial reporting, the decision represents a notable departure from expectations set by the previous film.
