PlayStation’s Lofty Preservation Efforts ‘Not Stopping Anytime Soon’

PlayStation’s preservation efforts are ongoing and gaining momentum. Sony has established a dedicated team within PlayStation focused specifically on archiving and preserving the company’s historical games and related materials. Led by Senior Build Engineer Garrett Fredley, who holds the title of IP Preservation lead, the team’s mission centers on organizing and maintaining access to source code, documentation, game assets, and other critical development materials from PlayStation’s extensive library.

The primary goal of this preservation initiative is to streamline access to these historical resources, making it easier for stakeholders to locate and utilize archived materials. Beyond simple archival, the work provides a foundation for potential future re-releases and remasters, ensuring that PlayStation’s legacy titles remain accessible to both internal teams and, eventually, players.

Fredley recently reaffirmed the team’s commitment to the preservation mission, stating that “PlayStation’s preservation journey is on its way, and we’re not looking to stop anytime soon.” He noted that sharing the team’s vision, work, and goals with Sony leadership was a significant milestone, indicating strong organizational support for these efforts. The acknowledgment from company executives suggests that game preservation remains a strategic priority for PlayStation moving forward.

This initiative reflects broader industry interest in game preservation—ensuring that historically significant titles and their development assets don’t become lost or inaccessible. For PlayStation, with decades of gaming history spanning multiple console generations, systematic preservation efforts help protect an invaluable catalog of intellectual property and cultural artifacts. The team’s continued expansion and leadership support suggest that PlayStation aims to be at the forefront of industry preservation efforts.
