Sony hasn’t decided on PS6 release date or price yet, and may even “change business models” in response to the memory crisis
Sony has announced that it has not yet determined a launch date or retail price for the PlayStation 6, citing rising memory costs and broader economic factors affecting the gaming industry. During a Q&A session following the company’s latest financial results, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki explained that the increased cost of vital components such as RAM would directly impact the console’s bill of materials and manufacturing expenses.
The announcement comes as the PS5 approaches the 100 million units sold milestone and nears the end of its sixth year on the market. PS5 sales have slowed recently, with only 1.5 million units sold in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025, down from 2.8 million in the same period the previous year.
According to Totoki, memory prices are expected to remain elevated through fiscal year 2027, creating significant challenges for Sony’s product strategy. The company is taking a cautious approach to the PS6’s launch, stating it will “observe and follow the situation” before committing to specific timelines and pricing. Notably, Sony is actively considering alternative business models for the console, suggesting the company may explore new ways to distribute or sell the PS6 rather than following traditional hardware release strategies.
While the PS6 has not yet been officially revealed, Sony confirmed it is increasing investment in the “next-generation platform.” The announcement reflects broader industry challenges related to component shortages and supply chain disruptions affecting hardware manufacturers globally. The anticipated November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to provide a boost to PS5 hardware sales in the coming months.
