Everything we know about PS6, Sony’s next-gen PlayStation console

PlayStation 5 is approaching its sixth birthday in 2026, marking the typical point when next-generation console discussions begin. Historically, PlayStation console generations last approximately seven years, with no PlayStation console launching more than seven years after its predecessor. This timeline suggests PS6 announcements could emerge in the coming years.

The timing may feel premature due to factors affecting the current generation. Extended game development cycles have resulted in slower PS5 release pacing, while supply chain constraints during the console’s early years limited adoption and extended the hardware’s active market window.

The seven-year cycle aligns with PlayStation history but is shorter than some competitors. The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 saw an eight-year gap between releases, as did the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The Game Boy holds the record for longest console lifespan at 12 years.

With PS5 still performing strongly relative to typical console lifecycles, official PS6 announcements likely remain some time away. However, historical precedent suggests Sony could begin planning technical reveals within the next couple of years, even if actual hardware release remains further in the future.
