Sony Just Reported A New Record-Breaking High Figure, But It’s Unsurprising

Sony has released its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, revealing a record-breaking milestone in PlayStation’s shift toward digital distribution. The company reported that 85% of PlayStation game sales were digital during the fourth quarter, representing a 2% increase from 2024, when digital sales comprised 80% across Q1 and Q4.

This continued acceleration reflects a broader industry transition that began between 2018-2019 on the PlayStation 4. The trend was further solidified when Sony launched the PlayStation 5 with an optional disc-drive model, effectively signaling that physical media was no longer central to the company’s strategy.

Despite the strong digital performance, Sony’s overall gaming revenue remained essentially flat year-over-year, suggesting that while consumer preferences have decisively shifted toward digital distribution, overall spending levels have remained stable. The financial results highlight how PlayStation has successfully adapted its business model to changing consumer behavior.

The record demonstrates that digital gaming has transitioned from a gradual industry shift to the overwhelming standard for PlayStation consumers, with physical media now representing less than 15% of the market.
