PlayStation sees AI as a ‘powerful tool,’ teams including Naughty Dog, San Diego Studio already using it

Sony has unveiled its strategic plan to integrate artificial intelligence into PlayStation game development, with executive leadership emphasizing AI as a transformative tool while insisting it will not replace human creativity.

During Sony’s latest financial results presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Hideaki Nishino and Sony President Totoki Hiroki outlined the company’s AI vision. They repeatedly characterized AI as a “powerful tool” that will enable “gaming experiences like never before,” featuring greater immersion and innovative gameplay opportunities. The company stresses that human creativity will “remain at the centre” of its efforts, with AI serving as an “amplifier of human imagination and catalyst for new possibilities.”

Several PlayStation first-party studios have already begun implementing AI tools in their development pipelines. Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio are using Mockingbird, an AI-powered animation tool that generates character animations from performance capture facial gestures. Santa Monica Studio is similarly adopting AI animation technology.

Sony describes AI applications across multiple development areas: automating repetitive workflows, improving software engineering productivity, accelerating quality assurance, and enhancing 3D modeling and animation processes. The company positions AI as enabling projects that were previously financially or time-prohibitive, potentially expanding the scope of what PlayStation studios can create.

Sony acknowledges the emerging debate around generative AI in entertainment, noting that AI encompasses multiple technologies—from large language models to procedural generation systems. However, the company emphasizes that the “vision, design, and emotional impact” of its games will continue originating from studio talent, with AI amplifying rather than replacing creative personnel.
