Europa Universalis 5’s ‘biggest update yet’ expands the Balkans, overhauls the economy, and fixes more than 2,000 bugs

Paradox Interactive has released patch 1.2, titled Echinades, for its grand strategy game Europa Universalis 5. The studio describes it as the game’s “biggest update yet,” with patch notes that reportedly span 72 pages in Google Doc format. The update addresses more than 2,000 bug fixes while introducing significant new content.

The primary focus of the Echinades update is expanding content in the Balkans region, aligning with the update’s thematic goal of geographic expansion. The patch introduces over 300 new advances and 150 new Dynamic Historical Events, alongside extensive new content tailored to Greece and the Balkans. The update also includes new formable nations and new reform options.

The scale of the patch reflects the complexity and depth of Europa Universalis 5, with changes touching multiple systems and regions of the game. The release of the update coincided with the launch of the game’s first DLC expansion.
