Star City will be different from For All Mankind in one exciting way

Apple TV+ has announced Star City, a spinoff of the alt-history series For All Mankind that focuses on the Soviet space program during the 1970s. For All Mankind depicts an alternate timeline where Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov beat the Americans to the Moon in 1969, with subsequent seasons jumping forward a decade to explore how this divergence shapes history. Season 5, currently airing, is set in 2012 with thousands of people living on Mars.

The spinoff will take a different approach to its parent series. Rather than following the pattern of jumping 10 years per season, Star City will maintain a sustained narrative set in the 1970s. Co-showrunner Matt Wolpert explained that the creative intention is “to keep telling a propulsive story set in the ’70s” without the need to advance the timeline by decades each season. This allows the writers more flexibility in developing character arcs and storylines within a longer fixed time period, rather than constantly resetting the narrative framework.
