Former Epic Games Exec Building European Alternative to Unreal Engine
Arjan Brussee, co-founder of Guerrilla Games and former technical director at Epic Games, is developing a new game engine called “Immense Engine” aimed at offering a European alternative to dominant American and Chinese game engines.
Brusee is an industry veteran with decades of game programming experience. He programmed Epic’s Jazz Jackrabbit games in the 1990s before co-founding Guerrilla Games in 2003, where he led production. After co-founding Cliff Bleszinski’s Boss Key Productions, he spent eight years at Epic Games in various roles, including global director of product management for Unreal Engine.
Now based in the Netherlands as an independent developer, Brussee is positioning Immense Engine as a response to what he sees as a gap in the European game engine market. The engine would compete directly with established alternatives like Unreal Engine and Unity, while also differentiating itself from Asian-developed engines. With his extensive background in engine development and production at major studios, Brussee aims to bring European perspective and expertise to the game development tools space.
