Physical Game Fans, Beware: Digital Downloads Hit an Astonishing 85% on PS5, PS4 Last Quarter

Sony’s PS5 and PS4 platforms have reached a record milestone in digital game adoption, with 85% of games purchased digitally in the financial quarter ending March 31st, 2026. The annual average for the full financial year stands at 78%, representing a 2% year-over-year increase and an all-time high for PlayStation.

This dramatic shift reflects a decade-long trend toward digital distribution. Digital sales represented just 19% of PlayStation game purchases a decade ago, but saw their biggest acceleration during 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic drove consumers toward online shopping, pushing the figure to 65%. Since then, digital adoption has steadily climbed year after year.

The story comes amid recent concerns about digital game ownership. A DRM-related scare involving the PlayStation Store sparked widespread worry among players about the security and permanence of their digital libraries. Sony clarified that it had implemented a new check-in feature designed to combat refund fraud schemes, not to restrict player access to owned content. The company confirmed that the update causes no material change to the user experience.

The data underscores the gaming industry’s fundamental shift away from physical media, driven by improved internet infrastructure, the convenience of instant access, and reduced manufacturing and distribution costs. While the industry has moved decisively digital, the remaining 22% of physical purchases suggests a persistent community of collectors and players who value ownership of physical media.
