Bennett Foddy, designer of QWOP and Baby Steps, is obsessed with friendslop games and won’t uninstall Baldur’s Gate 3, even though he’ll probably never finish it: ‘It was too big and so I stopped’

Bennett Foddy, the indie game designer behind QWOP and Baby Steps, discussed his gaming habits in PC Gamer’s “Disk Cleanup” feature, which regularly interviews notable PC gaming figures about their desktops and gaming libraries. Foddy revealed a particular affinity for “friendslop” games—casual, low-pressure experiences designed for relaxed play.

Despite acknowledging he will probably never finish it, Foddy refuses to uninstall Baldur’s Gate 3 from his system. He explained that the game’s enormous scope ultimately overwhelmed him, causing him to stop playing, yet he keeps it installed regardless. His experience reflects a broader gaming phenomenon where players maintain unfinished titles on their systems for various reasons.

The interview also traced Foddy’s lifelong gaming journey, starting at age five when he first encountered games on a ZX Spectrum. This early exposure made him “ravenous for games on all platforms,” leading him to explore the Commodore Amiga and eventually PC gaming. Formative experiences included getting lost in Zork on a loaner computer his parents brought home from work and playing NetHack with his sister, who had printed comprehensive game FAQs on dot matrix paper. These childhood gaming experiences fundamentally shaped Foddy’s approach to game design and his documented passion for accessible, unpretentious gaming experiences.
