Brennan Lee Mulligan’s Critical Role run is a D&D masterclass for players
Brennan Lee Mulligan, known for his work with Dimension 20, has taken over as Dungeon Master for Critical Role’s fourth campaign, replacing longtime DM Matthew Mercer. The new campaign, set in the godless, war-torn world of Aramán, marks significant changes for the long-running actual play series, including a doubled cast size compared to previous campaigns.
Now 25 episodes into what’s expected to be a 100+ episode run, the campaign is already demonstrating that Mulligan brings comparable expertise and mastery to the role of Dungeon Master as Mercer, who led the previous three campaigns. Critical Role’s past campaigns have become legendary within the TTRPG community for their storytelling and production quality, and Mulligan’s direction so far suggests Campaign 4 will maintain that standard.
The shift in leadership and setting represents the most substantial change in Critical Role’s history, with the doubled cast size and new world setting creating distinct differences from the established formula. However, early reviews from cast members and observers indicate that Mulligan’s skills at managing complex narratives and player dynamics prove he is well-suited to helming the show moving forward, offering players and viewers a masterclass in quality dungeon mastering.
