Directive 8020 review
Directive 8020, released May 12, 2026, is the fifth entry in Supermassive Games’ Dark Pictures Anthology and the franchise’s first venture into space-based horror. The game follows the crew of the Cassiopeia, an interstellar scout ship headed to Tau Ceti f, a potentially habitable planet designed to save humanity from Earth’s decline. When the crew awakens from cryosleep, they discover an alien organism capable of either corrupting or mimicking human crew members, creating a paranoid environment where players must question whether their teammates are truly human.
The narrative draws heavily from sci-fi horror classics like Ridley Scott’s Alien and John Carpenter’s The Thing, incorporating Lovecraftian elements rather than traditional xenomorph-style threats. The game emphasizes branching narrative choices and their consequences, with players navigating trust-based decision-making while an underlying mega-corporation’s involvement hints at deeper mysteries.
Critical reception has been notably mixed. Some reviewers praised the game highly—But Why Tho gave it 9.5/10, celebrating it as “a love letter to space horror” with compelling dialogue and interactions, while The Sixth Axis awarded 9/10. However, several other outlets expressed significant disappointment. Critics including Eurogamer, GameSpot, Polygon, and Push Square found Directive 8020 to be derivative and failing to fully realize its promising premise. Common criticisms include an aging gameplay formula featuring rote stealth sequences, grating voice performances, and dialogue choices that lack genuine impact. Multiple reviewers acknowledged the game’s appealing concept but felt execution fell short, describing it as more entertaining in concept than in practice.
