Mortal Kombat 3 Not Confirmed Yet, But Writer Is Nearly Done With Its Script
Mortal Kombat 2 is currently performing well at the box office following its May 8 theatrical release, though a third entry in the rebooted film series has not yet been officially confirmed. Writer Jeremy Slater, who penned the scripts for the first two films, is nearly finished with a draft screenplay for a potential Mortal Kombat 3. The completion of the script doesn’t guarantee the film will be greenlit, as the decision ultimately rests with New Line Cinema.
Director Simon McQuoid, who has helmed both previous entries, struck a cautious tone regarding the franchise’s future. In an interview ahead of Mortal Kombat 2’s theatrical release, McQuoid stated he doesn’t want to be “overly confident” about the prospects of a third film. This measured approach suggests the studio is taking a wait-and-see stance, likely evaluating the box office performance of the current installment before committing to future projects.
Slater has signaled his readiness to proceed if New Line decides to move forward, indicating he is prepared to deliver the script whenever the studio is ready. The franchise’s strong box office performance may work in favor of a greenlight, though the studio’s decision-making process remains opaque. As it stands, Mortal Kombat 3 remains in development limbo, with no official announcement forthcoming until New Line makes its intentions clear.
