Despite previous comments, Star Fox’s original creator thinks Switch 2 version is “exactly” what he “had in mind” in the 90s

Nintendo announced a remake of the classic Star Fox 64 for Switch 2, featuring significantly redesigned character models that offer a more realistic aesthetic compared to the cartoon style seen in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The visual overhaul has proven polarizing among fans, with some expressing disappointment at the departure from the softer, more animated look of the original Nintendo 64 title.

Takaya Imamura, who co-created Fox McCloud and served as art director on the original Star Fox 64, initially appeared to align with critics of the new direction. He previously stated that he preferred the Galaxy Movie’s design approach for the character. However, Imamura has since reversed course, posting on X (formerly Twitter) that the remake’s character designs are “exactly what” he “had in mind” when developing the N64 version in the 1990s.

Imamura’s endorsement carries significant weight as the designer of the original game, potentially lending legitimacy to the creative direction chosen for the remake. His seal of approval stands in contrast to his earlier public comments, suggesting he may have had time to fully evaluate the finished designs or reconsider his initial perspective on the project’s artistic vision.
