Wordle Is Becoming A TV Show, With Savannah Guthrie Hosting

Wordle, The New York Times’ wildly popular word-puzzle game, is being adapted into a primetime television game show set to premiere on NBC in 2027. The announcement confirms months of speculation about the network’s plans to capitalize on the game’s massive cultural phenomenon.

Hosted by Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, the new series will be produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio in partnership with The New York Times and Jimmy Fallon’s production company Electric Hot Dog. The show will be filmed in Manchester, England, and will maintain Wordle’s recognizable visual identity, featuring the game’s signature typeface and color scheme.

The game show format will feature teams of players competing in a fast-paced competition for cash prizes. Rather than players completing the puzzle individually on their phones or computers, contestants will participate together in person, adapting the familiar word-guessing mechanics for television audiences.

This adaptation represents a significant expansion of Wordle beyond its digital origins. Since its release in late 2021, the game has become a global sensation, acquired by The New York Times in January 2022. The television show marks the latest example of gaming franchises being adapted for traditional media.
