New testing shows DisplayPort 2.1 is very picky about the monitor cable you’re using
Testing by Monitors Unboxed has revealed compatibility issues with DisplayPort 2.1 implementations, challenging the assumption that simply connecting a DisplayPort 2.1-compatible GPU to a DisplayPort 2.1-compatible monitor will automatically work properly. The primary appeal of DisplayPort 2.1 is its substantial 80 Gbps bandwidth capacity, which enables support for higher resolutions, refresh rates, and color depths without relying on compression. However, not all DisplayPort 2.1 cables can deliver this full bandwidth. To achieve the maximum 80 Gbps speeds, users require DP80-certified cables specifically, indicating that cable quality and certification play a crucial role in achieving optimal performance.
DisplayPort supports an optional image compression technology called Display Stream Compression (DSC), designed to be visually lossless while reducing bandwidth requirements. While this technology has been implemented to provide flexibility in display configurations, there remains ongoing debate within the industry regarding its visual fidelity and real-world effectiveness.
