Magic’s Foundations Commander decks look perfect for new players

Wizards of the Coast is releasing five new mono-colored Foundations Commander decks alongside Magic: The Gathering’s Reality Fracture set this fall. These preconstructed decks are being positioned as an accessible entry point for new players, following a significant gap in the release calendar.

The announcement comes as part of a varied Commander deck rollout across Magic’s upcoming sets. While Marvel Super Heroes will deliver four new Commander decks in June, and Reality Fracture itself will include a single four-color deck, August’s The Hobbit set will forgo new precons entirely. The Foundations decks fill this release gap in the fall lineup.

The new mono-colored decks represent an evolution from Wizards’ previous approach. The 2022 Starter Commander decks, which featured two-color combinations, have become increasingly expensive since their release, creating a barrier for new players looking to enter the format. The Foundations decks appear designed to address this issue, offering more accessible entry points while expanding options for different play styles.

These preconstructed Commander decks have already been spotted on online retailers, confirming their imminent availability. The focus on a fresh slate with the Foundations branding suggests Wizards is reconsidering how it serves newer players in the Commander format.
