Metroid Dread developer MercurySteam conducts layoffs

Spanish video game developer MercurySteam, known for developing Metroid: Samus Returns on Nintendo 3DS and the critically-acclaimed Metroid Dread on Nintendo Switch, has announced a workforce reduction. The studio described the move as a “workforce adjustment process” in a LinkedIn post, though the specific number of affected employees was not disclosed.

In their statement, MercurySteam emphasized their commitment to affected workers, expressing “deepest respect, gratitude, and support for the people affected, whose talent, effort, and commitment have been an important part of the studio’s history.” The independent developer pledged to help displaced employees find new opportunities, offering to connect them with other studios and companies actively seeking experienced developers.

The layoffs reflect broader industry challenges that have prompted numerous workforce reductions across major publishers and developers in recent years. MercurySteam acknowledged this context, noting that such adjustments have become commonplace within the gaming industry, while underscoring the difficulty of the situation. The studio’s measured response highlights growing scrutiny on how companies handle workforce reductions and support affected workers during periods of industry contraction.
