NLC to Transition to Separate Regional Leagues in 2027
The Northern League of Legends Championship will undergo a major structural overhaul in 2027, splitting into two distinct regional leagues following the collapse of its current operator, Leagues ApS. The split will separate the ‘UK and Ireland’ operations from the ‘Nordic countries,’ marking a significant shift for the competitive League of Legends landscape in Northern Europe.
This restructuring comes in the wake of Leagues ApS’s inability to continue operating the league. In March, the company informed Riot Games that it was no longer in a position to manage operations, citing financial difficulties. The operational crisis was preceded by months of reports and social media accusations regarding missed payments to broadcast talent, which significantly impacted the quality and professionalism of the league’s presentation.
The impact on the league’s credibility became most apparent during the Winter split, which saw the departure of most of the league’s established broadcast talent. This exodus resulted in a split that drew considerable criticism for its lack of professionalism and production quality. The 2027 restructuring appears to be Riot’s attempt to restore stability and confidence in the regional competitive scene.
The transition will occur after the completion of the 2026 Spring and Summer splits, providing a window for Riot to establish new operational frameworks for the separated leagues. This move reflects broader challenges within esports league operations, where financial management and talent retention have proven critical issues for maintaining audience trust and professional standards.
