Sega’s “Super Game” has been cancelled, but revivals of classics like Crazy Taxi and Golden Axe are still moving forward

Sega has cancelled its ambitious “Super Game” project, revealed in its latest financial results. The project, first announced in 2021, was intended to launch by March 2026 as a triple-A online title featuring NFTs, social networking, and cloud streaming capabilities that would “go beyond the traditional framework of games.”

The cancellation is part of a strategic pivot away from free-to-play games and games as a service following disappointing financial results. Sega reported a $31.6 million net loss in fiscal year 2026, driven largely by a $200 million impairment loss from its Rovio acquisition. Free-to-play titles including Angry Birds mobile games and Sonic Rumble Party underperformed expectations. Citing “intensifying market competition” and “emerging competing titles,” Sega determined that continuing the project was untenable given current business conditions.

As part of this strategic shift, over 100 developers previously working on free-to-play projects have been transferred to full game development teams. Sega is lowering the priority of games-as-a-service in its portfolio moving forward.

However, classic IP reboots announced in 2023 remain in active development. These include new versions of Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage. Additional upcoming titles on Sega’s roadmap include Persona 4 Revival, Total War: Warhammer 40,000, Total War: Medieval 3, a new Virtual Fighter project, and Alien: Isolation.
