Nintendo promises a strong roster of Switch 2 games to counterbalance the recent price increases

Nintendo has announced a $50 price increase for the Switch 2, raising the MSRP from $449.99 to $499.99 effective in September 2026. In a financial results presentation, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa apologized for the inconvenience, stating that rising manufacturing costs forced the company’s hand despite its preference to prioritize wide adoption.

Notably, Nintendo acknowledged that even at the new $500 price point, the console does not fully cover production costs. The company explained that while it wanted to maintain affordability for consumers, the mounting cost pressures over an extended period made the price adjustment necessary to ensure profitability.

To offset customer frustration over the price hike, Nintendo is committing to “a robust software line-up to enhance the Switch 2 ownership value.” The company hopes this combination—higher hardware pricing paired with a strong games catalog—will maintain profitability at previous fiscal year levels and retain consumer interest despite the increased entry cost for the console.
