Haunted Chocolatier Won’t Just Be Bigger Than Stardew Valley, It’ll Also Be Creepier

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, creator of the massively successful Stardew Valley, is actively developing Haunted Chocolatier, his next major title. According to a recent Game Informer interview, the upcoming game will significantly expand upon Stardew Valley’s successful formula while introducing darker and more unsettling themes.

Barone stated that Haunted Chocolatier is “way bigger than Stardew Valley” in multiple respects. The game will feature substantially more maps, a greater variety of monsters, and a more complex item system with expanded equipment slots. He emphasized that “everything is cranked up,” indicating a comprehensive scaling of game systems and content across the board.

The game centers on creating confections, managing a chocolatier shop, and pursuing romantic relationships—conceptually building on Stardew Valley’s life-simulation premise while adopting a creepier aesthetic. This tonal shift toward darkness and unease represents a notable departure from Barone’s previous work.

Currently, Barone is dedicating substantial effort to the project, working seven days a week with five days devoted to Haunted Chocolatier and two days to the upcoming 1.7 update for Stardew Valley. While the game remains in active development with no official release date announced, the significant expansion in scope and tonal evolution suggest a substantially different and more ambitious experience from his breakout hit.
