Cyberpunk TCG creators reveal the biggest problem in modern games

WeirdCo’s The Official Cyberpunk TCG, created by co-founders Luohan Wei and Elliot Cook, has achieved record-breaking success on Kickstarter, raising over $28 million from backers. The trading card game, based on the post-apocalyptic sci-fi Cyberpunk franchise, has transitioned from concept to tangible product as the team works toward market launch.

The development process has involved extensive community feedback, with hundreds or thousands of players already participating in playtesting Alpha decks and shaping the game’s direction. Beta products are scheduled to ship to the campaign’s 50,000+ backers in Q3 2026.

Beyond design and technical challenges, Wei and Cook face a critical hurdle: converting massive Kickstarter backing into a sustainable, long-term trading card game community. This transition from funding success to ongoing player engagement represents a significant challenge in modern game development, particularly for crowdfunded titles that must maintain momentum and community interest beyond launch. Building a thriving TCG community requires not just a quality product, but sustained engagement, continued support, and the ability to keep players invested long after the initial campaign excitement fades.
