AI is ‘creatively soulless,’ says director of Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic: ‘I’m just really unimpressed with it’
Casey Hudson, director of the original Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, has expressed strong skepticism about generative AI in game development. In an interview with Bloomberg, Hudson criticized AI as “creatively soulless,” stating he is “really unimpressed with it.”
Hudson is currently leading development of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at his studio Arcanaut Studios. While many industry leaders cite generative AI as a solution for creating games with smaller, more efficient teams, Hudson explicitly rejected this approach. He aims to keep his team lean without relying on AI-generated content to compensate for limited headcount.
The comments highlight a growing divide within the gaming industry over AI’s role in game development. Some studios are exploring generative AI to reduce production costs and streamline workflows, while others, like Hudson, argue that AI lacks the creative depth necessary for meaningful game development. Hudson’s stance suggests that his upcoming Star Wars project will prioritize traditional game development practices and human creativity over AI-assisted content generation.
