Nintendo Won’t Focus On Making Switch 2 Games Exclusively, Switch 1 Remains Important
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting both the original Nintendo Switch and the newly launched Switch 2, rejecting the notion that the company will focus exclusively on new hardware. During the company’s latest earnings briefing, Furukawa stated that Nintendo intends to “expand the entire software business, including titles for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2,” rather than concentrating resources solely on Switch 2 software.
This statement comes amid questions about the declining sales performance of Mario Kart World, a Switch 2-exclusive title. The game experienced slower uptake following Nintendo’s decision to discontinue the hardware bundle that packaged the game with Switch 2 consoles. Despite the sales slowdown, Furukawa emphasized that Mario Kart World remains a significant title for the company’s portfolio.
The announcement reflects Nintendo’s dual-platform strategy as it transitions players from the original Switch to its successor. By continuing to develop and support games across both generations, Nintendo aims to capture revenue from both its existing user base and new Switch 2 adopters. This approach suggests the company views the original Switch as remaining commercially relevant despite the new console’s arrival in the market.
