Peter Jackson Has Explained Why He’s Not Directing Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Peter Jackson, director of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, has explained his decision not to direct the upcoming film “The Hunt for Gollum,” the first of several planned Middle-earth films set to revive the franchise. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Jackson revealed that actor Andy Serkis—renowned for his pioneering motion capture work as Gollum—will instead direct the project.

Jackson expressed confidence in Serkis’s directorial vision, stating he believes the motion capture specialist will deliver a “more exciting” take on the material. Positioned as a prequel to “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the film will explore what became of the One Ring and Gollum in the years between The Hobbit and Fellowship. The narrative will follow multiple iconic characters—including Gandalf, Aragorn, and Sauron—as they track the fallen creature through Middle-earth.

The project marks a significant shift for the franchise, representing the beginning of a new wave of Lord of the Rings cinema. Jackson’s decision to pass the directing responsibilities to Serkis reflects his confidence in the actor’s ability to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved saga while respecting the franchise’s cinematic legacy.
