Peter Jackson’s Tintin movie is back on after 19 years of dreaming

Peter Jackson, acclaimed director of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, is returning to feature film directing after a 12-year hiatus. At the Cannes Film Festival, Jackson announced he has completed the script for his long-awaited Tintin film—a project that has been in development for nearly two decades.

Jackson has remained active in the entertainment industry during his time away from directing, producing films including Mortal Engines and Andy Serkis’ upcoming Middle-earth project The Hunt for Gollum. However, he has not stepped behind the camera for a narrative feature since 2012.

The Tintin project represents a return to Jackson’s distinctive filmmaking style, which blends intimate storytelling with epic scope. The announcement at Cannes suggests development is progressing beyond the scriptwriting phase, offering renewed hope for fans of both Jackson and Hergé’s classic comic book series. With the script now complete, Jackson appears ready to embark on bringing the famous reporter and his dog Snowy to the screen after nearly two decades of development.
