The Punisher: One Last Kill ‘CGI’ Shot Was Mocked for Looking Like a GTA Cutscene, but It Turns Out It Was Done for Real

Marvel’s Punisher: One Last Kill Special Presentation became the subject of viral online mockery following an awkwardly-executed action sequence during the 48-minute film’s climactic battle. The short film, starring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, features multiple elaborate combat sequences as the character moves through waves of enemies.

The controversial moment occurs when Castle is shoved off a rooftop onto an air conditioning unit. He falls backward while shooting at his attacker in slow motion before landing on the AC unit below. At the moment of impact, the shot’s quality deteriorates noticeably, with Castle appearing to be replaced by a digital character. The choppy appearance prompted widespread online comparisons to death animations from Grand Theft Auto 5, with viewers assuming Marvel had shipped the Special Presentation with unfinished visual effects.

Despite the near-universal mockery, the shot was actually performed practically rather than as unfinished CGI. The unexpected visual quality appears to be a result of the stunt work itself rather than post-production failures. The incident adds to ongoing conversations surrounding visual effects quality in recent Marvel Studios projects, which have faced increasing scrutiny for VFX inconsistencies.
