Former NetEase exec Simon Zhu secures $100m to launch GreaterThan Group
Simon Zhu, a former NetEase executive, has established GreaterThan Group (GTG), a new holding company that has secured $100 million in funding to launch and support three game development studios. The funding comprises $40 million in secured capital alongside approximately $60 million in additional commitments.
The three studios under GTG’s umbrella are Arcanaut Studios in Edmonton, BulletFarm in Los Angeles, and MAGship in Tokyo. Each studio brings experienced leadership to the portfolio. Arcanaut Studios is led by Casey Hudson, the game director behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. BulletFarm is overseen by David Vonderhaar, known for his work as a studio design director on the Call of Duty franchise.
Arcanaut Studios has already announced its debut title, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, which was revealed at The Game Awards 2025. This project represents a significant entry point for the newly formed group, building on Hudson’s extensive experience with the Star Wars IP and the beloved KOTOR legacy.
The establishment of GreaterThan Group reflects consolidation trends within the gaming industry, bringing together established veteran talent under unified funding and operational structure. With both Hudson and Vonderhaar anchoring two of the three studios, GTG appears positioned to develop commercially and creatively significant titles.
