Xbox Game Pass For China Seemingly in Development
Microsoft appears to be developing a Chinese version of Xbox Game Pass, according to evidence discovered in a recent Xbox PC app update. The discovery suggests the company is seriously exploring expansion into one of the world’s largest gaming markets, where the subscription service is not currently available.
Clues pointing to the development come from references to “Project Saluki” found within the Xbox PC app update files. Microsoft’s internal description for this codename indicates the initiative involves “China market expansion for Game Pass, Rewards, and subscription tiers,” though the company has not officially confirmed these plans or provided additional details.
The potential expansion aligns with recent strategic changes to Xbox Game Pass under new CEO Asha Sharma, which have included price reductions and the introduction of a new Starter tier. However, entering the Chinese market presents significant challenges—Microsoft currently has no Game Pass presence in the region, despite maintaining partnerships with publishers like Activision Blizzard to distribute individual games there.
While official confirmation remains pending, the presence of “Project Saluki” in the PC app suggests Microsoft is actively preparing to bring its flagship subscription service to the Chinese gaming market.
