Rumour: Project Helix Unlikely To Include Disc Drive, But Xbox May Have A Digital Solution

According to Windows Central’s Jez Corden, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console, codenamed “Project Helix,” is rumored to be a fully digital system without a disc drive. Based on “hints” from sources familiar with the project, Corden reports that the upcoming console-PC hybrid will follow the model of modern gaming devices like PCs and laptops, eliminating physical media support entirely.

The shift toward a disc-free design reflects the gaming industry’s broader move toward digital distribution. With Game Pass and other subscription services already central to Microsoft’s gaming strategy, the lack of a disc drive aligns with the company’s digital-first approach. This marks a significant departure from the current Xbox Series X and Series S generation, which still offer physical media options.

The report also suggests similar expectations for PlayStation’s next-generation console, though details remain limited. If confirmed, Project Helix would represent a major industry shift as console manufacturers increasingly prioritize digital ecosystems over traditional disc-based media.
