AMD now owns 38.1% of the overall x86 CPU market according to new research but actually lost ground in desktop PCs

AMD has expanded its dominance in the x86 CPU market, capturing 38.1% of overall market revenue according to new data from Mercury Research, up from 35.4% in the previous quarter. However, the company’s growth story is nuanced, as it actually lost ground in the desktop PC segment despite its overall market gains.

The company’s strongest performance comes from the server market, where AMD now controls 46.2% of revenue and 33.2% of unit sales—a gain of approximately 3-4% from the previous quarter. AMD’s success in servers reflects a strategic strength: its server-grade CPUs command premium pricing, selling for significantly more on average than comparable Intel offerings, demonstrating strong market positioning in the lucrative data center and enterprise segments.

AMD is also making progress in the laptop market, where it holds 28.9% of overall revenue and 28.3% of unit sales. This growth in the mobile computing space shows diversification beyond traditional desktop markets.

The divergence between AMD’s overall market share gains and its desktop PC losses suggests a shifting competitive landscape. While AMD maintains leadership in high-performance server and enterprise applications, Intel appears to be holding stronger ground in the consumer desktop segment. The data reveals that the CPU market’s competitive dynamics vary significantly across different market segments, with AMD’s strength concentrated in segments where higher pricing power translates to significant revenue gains despite smaller unit volumes.
