BFI announces recipients of IBD awards, launches new funding stream for UK devs

The BFI has announced the recipients of its International Business Development (IBD) awards, marking a significant boost to funding for UK independent game developers. The announcement also introduces a new dedicated funding stream to support video game marketing efforts.

This expansion follows a substantial increase in the UK Global Screen Fund’s (UKGSF) annual budget, which has grown from £7 million to over £18 million for the 2026-2029 strategic plan. The UKGSF is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The latest round of IBD awards distributes a total of £2.07 million across the screen sector, with five UK independent games companies among the recipients. These non-recoupable grants range from £50,000 to £200,000 and are designed to support business strategies that help studios develop their international presence and competitiveness.

Notable recipients include Dlala Studios and Newfangled Games, both recognized for their potential and contributions to the gaming industry. These grants represent a significant commitment from the UK government to support the growth and internationalization of the country’s independent game development sector.

The funding initiative reflects growing recognition of the video games industry’s importance to the UK economy and cultural landscape. By providing direct financial support and marketing assistance, the BFI aims to help British independent developers compete effectively on the global stage and bring their titles to international markets.
