Printer-based scheme attempted to smuggle $8,967,742 worth of cocaine into Australia

A 47-year-old man from Victoria, Australia has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in an elaborate cocaine smuggling scheme involving hidden compartments in office printers.

In 2017, the Australian Federal Police intercepted a shipment of five printers arriving in Melbourne that contained 22.4 kilograms of cocaine concealed within the devices’ paper trays. The contraband was valued at AUD $8,967,742 (approximately USD $6 million). The scheme demonstrates how smugglers attempt to exploit commonplace office equipment to transport illegal drugs undetected across international borders.

Upon discovering the cocaine, authorities conducted testing and subsequently replaced the drug with a substitute as part of their investigation. The case highlights ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in preventing narcotics trafficking through creative concealment methods in freight shipments. The lengthy prison sentence reflects the severity of international drug smuggling offenses in Australia.
