Control was destined to become an RPG franchise all along, says creative director: ‘That’s how Control was born’

Control: Resonant, the upcoming sequel to Remedy Entertainment’s Control, will mark the franchise’s evolution into a full action RPG with Diablo-like mechanics and loot-driven gameplay systems. Creative director Mikael Kasurinen recently revealed that this genre shift was not a last-minute decision, but rather the franchise’s intended direction from its conception.

During an interview at Gamescom Latam, Kasurinen stated that he always envisioned Control as “the Remedy version of an RPG experience.” Rather than the original game simply laying groundwork for a future RPG entry, Kasurinen described Control itself as the first step in realizing this long-term vision for an RPG franchise.

The revelation may come as a surprise to many, given that the original Control was primarily classified as a shooter with elements of horror and sci-fi. However, Kasurinen’s comments suggest the creative team had carefully planned the franchise’s evolution into a more comprehensive RPG experience with deeper character progression systems.

Recent hands-on coverage from PCG reviewer Robin Valentine at Gamescom Latam highlighted Control: Resonant’s Diablo-inspired dungeon-crawling mechanics and loot systems, emphasizing how significantly the gameplay has transformed from the original entry. This upcoming sequel represents Remedy Entertainment’s deliberate pivot toward delivering a full-fledged action RPG that fulfills the creative vision established during the series’ earliest conceptual stages.
