EC Comics Explores the Horrors of War in New Shellshock Anthology
EC Comics, the storied comic book brand known for pioneering horror and science fiction storytelling, is experiencing a creative revival through a partnership with independent publisher Oni Press. The collaboration continues with the release of Shellshock, a new one-shot horror-war anthology that blends the genre sensibilities the original EC Comics was famous for.
Shellshock #1 is a substantial 56-page special featuring contributions from prominent comic creators across multiple disciplines. The writing team includes Julio Anta (known for This Land Is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story), John Arcudi (B.P.R.D.), Benito Cereno (Invincible Presents: Atom Eve), and Michael W. Conrad (Double Walker). The artistic contributions come from Tom Fowler, David Lapham (Stray Bullets), Albert Monteys (whose work includes Slaughterhouse-Five: The Graphic Novel adaptation), and Shawn Martinbrough (Thief of Thieves).
The partnership between Oni Press and EC Comics represents an ongoing effort to deliver curated horror and sci-fi anthology collections from established industry talent. By reviving the EC Comics brand—historically significant for its influential horror storytelling in the 1950s—Oni Press is positioning itself to bring modern takes on classic genre material to contemporary audiences. The Shellshock anthology specifically combines war narrative with horror elements, creating a thematic intersection that explores the psychological and physical toll of combat through a genre lens.
