Fortnite Nerfs Lethal Fall Damage in Big Gameplay Shakeup as Overwatch Update Arrives
Fortnite has released a major gameplay update on May 14, coinciding with a significant Overwatch collaboration that brings characters like Tracer and Genji to the battle royale island. The update implements substantial changes to gameplay mechanics, particularly in Zero Build mode, marking an experimental shift in the game’s direction.
The most notable change to the main Battle Royale mode is the complete elimination of lethal fall damage. Players no longer die from falls; instead, they “splat” onto the ground and recover with 1 HP, requiring medical items to restore health. This mechanic fundamentally changes combat dynamics and encourages more aggressive vertical gameplay without the threat of instant death.
Zero Build mode has undergone a comprehensive overhaul designed for players who prefer gameplay without building mechanics. A key addition is the “Pocket Item” system—a new unlimited-use item randomly assigned to each player at the beginning of matches. These pocket items can include offensive and defensive utilities such as Shockwave Grenades, Medmist for healing, and Shield Bubbles, providing consistent access to tactical tools throughout matches.
Beyond pocket items, the update has expanded the overall loot pool with new defensive and utility items, creating a more varied gameplay experience. Epic Games has framed these changes as experimental, explicitly intending them to test and shape the future direction of both Zero Build and the broader Fortnite experience.
