‘It nearly killed me’: Why studio head James Ohlen left sci-fi RPG Exodus mid-development—and why EA crushing his Star Wars: The Old Republic reboot was the ‘beginning of the end’ at BioWare
James Ohlen, veteran game designer and co-founder of Archetype Entertainment, has left the studio mid-development of its debut sci-fi RPG Exodus. Ohlen, who previously led projects at BioWare including Baldur’s Gate 2 and Knights of the Old Republic before retiring in 2018, founded Archetype Entertainment in 2019 but departed in December 2025 after struggling with severe burnout.
In a recent interview, Ohlen revealed the toll of balancing dual roles as studio head and creative lead: “I was running on fumes, and it was hurting my health, and my personal life, and everything.” He describes the experience as nearly life-threatening, having warned colleagues he should never run a studio due to the personal strain. The position required him to care deeply about every aspect of development while managing studio operations, a combination he found unsustainable.
Ohlen’s departure comes after years of frustration in the game industry. He has indicated that EA’s handling of his Star Wars: The Old Republic reboot at BioWare marked “the beginning of the end” for him at that studio, contributing to his decision to leave and attempt a fresh start with Archetype. Despite founding the new studio with ambitions for creative freedom, the demands of leadership ultimately proved incompatible with his health and personal wellbeing.
