Marathon Reveals New PVE Mode and Big Plans for the Future

Bungie has unveiled significant plans to expand Marathon’s playerbase, headlined by a new PVE-only mode designed for players seeking non-competitive gameplay. The announcement comes as the studio responds to market challenges; Sony recently reported a $765 million impairment loss attributed to Marathon’s underperformance on Steam. Director Joe Ziegler’s roadmap for seasons 3, 4, and 5 emphasizes Bungie’s commitment to “evolve Marathon as a whole,” signaling a strategic pivot toward broader appeal.

Beyond the PVE mode, the content pipeline includes a new map featuring alien-themed environments and mind-warping debuffs, along with a new defensive Runner shell called Sentinel. These additions reflect Bungie’s effort to diversify gameplay experiences and attract players across different skill levels and playstyles.

The PVE mode represents a tactical response to a core challenge of extraction shooters: mandatory player-versus-player competition. By offering a cooperative alternative, Bungie aims to retain existing players while reaching those deterred by competitive gameplay. The comprehensive content roadmap suggests the studio is directly addressing player feedback and market realities, positioning Marathon for growth through increased variety and accessibility.
