‘Rest in Peace’ — Party Animals Review-Bombed Over AI Video Contest

Recreate Games stirred significant controversy on May 13 when it announced a $75,000 AI video contest for its popular party game Party Animals. The contest invited players to submit short films, animations, music videos, and other creative content, with entries requiring that AI-generated content be “the core creative tool.”

The announcement prompted swift backlash from the gaming community, with players expressing strong disapproval of the AI-generation requirement. The negative response was severe enough to trigger a review-bombing campaign on Steam, where the game had previously maintained over 17,000 “Very Positive” player reviews since its late 2023 release.

Instead of canceling the contest outright, Recreate Games issued an apology acknowledging the controversy while maintaining its intent to proceed. However, rather than making a definitive decision independently, the studio opened a poll asking followers what it should do regarding the competition. The submission deadline for the contest was set for August 31, with a prize pool that included shares of the $75,000 total.

The incident highlights growing tensions within the gaming community over artificial intelligence integration in creative industries, with many players viewing AI-mandatory contests as dismissive of human creativity and artistry. Party Animals, a casual party brawler released across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, had been a community favorite before this announcement.
