PlayStation Shutting Something Else Down, But It’s Not a Studio This Time
PlayStation is shutting down Repeat.gg, a tournament website it acquired in July 2022. The acquisition was part of PlayStation’s broader initiative to establish a presence in hardcore fighting game esports, alongside its purchase of a stake in the Evo fighting tournament. However, PlayStation’s esports ambitions have since shifted. The company divested from Evo last year, selling its stake in the prestigious fighting game competition. Now, the company has announced the closure of Repeat.gg, stating “After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down the platform.” The shutdown marks the end of PlayStation’s effort to maintain dedicated tournament infrastructure for competitive fighting games, reflecting a broader retreat from the esports platform space the company had begun building several years prior.
