“I’m not going to actually do this” - Stardew Valley creator isn’t really going to let you cheat in your marriage in the cosy farming sim

Stardew Valley creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has clarified that rumors about adding marriage cheating mechanics to his farming simulator are unfounded. Barone, speaking with GameInformer, explained that he was engaging in a theoretical discussion about game design rather than confirming any actual development plans.

The creator emphasized that while such a feature could fit the game’s sandbox nature, he has no intention of implementing it. When discussing the concept theoretically, Barone expressed his philosophy on player freedom in sandbox games: players should be capable of performing morally questionable actions while facing realistic consequences. However, he made clear this was purely hypothetical.

Regarding how such a system might work if it ever existed, Barone stated he wouldn’t simply make “everyone be totally chill about it”—suggesting that NPCs would react negatively to infidelity, creating meaningful consequences for player choices rather than allowing consequence-free transgression.

The clarification puts to rest recent speculation that the beloved indie farming game would expand its relationship mechanics to include such options. Stardew Valley’s wholesome reputation has made such rumors noteworthy enough to address publicly, as fans closely follow any proposed changes to the game’s systems.
