UK games industry “fundamentally misunderstood”, new report calls for unified research framework

UKIE and entertainment charity OKRE have released the “Building a Unified Framework for the UK Video Games Impacts” report, addressing what they describe as a fundamental misunderstanding of the UK games industry’s true value and impact.

The report highlights a significant gap between the gaming industry’s actual economic and social contributions and how it is perceived by policymakers and investors. This disconnect has resulted in limited investment, inadequate policy support, and restricted growth opportunities for the sector.

The unified research framework proposes collaboration between three key stakeholders: the games industry itself, government bodies, and academic institutions. This coordinated approach aims to establish a standardized methodology for measuring and demonstrating the industry’s value to both government and investors.

The framework serves as a foundation for researchers and policymakers to better understand gaming’s multifaceted impact and make more informed decisions regarding industry support and investment. By bridging the gap between current perceptions and actual impact, the report seeks to enable the UK games industry to maximize its economic and social potential.
