Marathon “overwhelming” for newcomers, director admits as plans for PvE and PvP-lite modes revealed

Bungie has announced plans to revitalize Marathon, its divisive extraction shooter, in response to feedback that the game is overwhelming for new players. Game director Joe Ziegler revealed the roadmap in a detailed blog post outlining recent successes and the team’s vision for future updates.

To broaden the game’s appeal, Bungie is introducing new PvE (Player versus Environment) and PvP-lite game modes as alternatives to the hardcore core experience. These experimental modes will debut in Season 2, with one launching at the season’s start and another rolling out mid-to-late season. The first experimental mode will emphasize PvE gameplay with a light touch of PvP elements, offering a more relaxed experience for players intimidated by the game’s complex, punishing mechanics.

Recent additions to Marathon have included the Cryo Archive end-game map, a ranked competitive mode, experimental duo queue options, and the C.A.R.R.I system. Despite the mixed reception, Ziegler acknowledged the formation of a dedicated core community around the game. Bungie has also planned substantial gameplay tweaks for upcoming updates, though specific details remain limited.

The focus on alternative game modes reflects a broader strategy to create entry points for new players while retaining the depth that appeals to its existing community. These changes signal Bungie’s commitment to iterating on feedback and evolving Marathon following its launch.
