Owner of $400,000 in bitcoin was locked out of their account a decade ago and they just used Claude to get back in

A user locked out of their Bitcoin wallet for a decade has successfully regained access using Anthropic’s Claude AI model, recovering cryptocurrency worth approximately $402,000. The account, created in 2015, contained five Bitcoin. After being unable to remember the password for roughly ten years, the user turned to Claude for assistance in recovering their digital assets.

Using the AI model, they systematically generated and tested approximately 7 trillion potential passwords until identifying one that worked. Notably, the successful password was a variant that preceded their current password, suggesting the user had undergone multiple password changes over the years. This technical breakthrough highlights the practical applications of advanced AI tools for solving real-world problems beyond their typical use cases.

The recovery is particularly significant given cryptocurrency’s volatile market dynamics. Had the user successfully accessed the account earlier in Bitcoin’s history, they might have sold at a lower price. The account remained inaccessible for approximately a decade, during which Bitcoin experienced substantial price fluctuations, making the timing of recovery financially consequential.

This case demonstrates how AI language models can assist with password recovery and data access challenges, while also underscoring the importance of secure but memorable password practices for high-value digital assets.
