Final Fantasy 14 is promising big changes with Evercold, but I hope it’s not a surface-level attempt

Square Enix has announced major changes coming to Final Fantasy 14 with the upcoming Evercold expansion. At April’s North American Fan Festival, director Naoki Yoshida unveiled the studio’s commitment to addressing years of stagnation in the MMO, which has persisted since at least 2022.

The expansion will introduce a completely redesigned combat system focused on emphasizing job individuality and skill expression. Additionally, the development team is overhauling the gearing progression system to make it more accessible and less punishing for players. These changes represent a significant departure from the studio’s previous reluctance to implement drastic modifications to core gameplay systems.

With Creative Studio 3 positioning these updates as their top priority, Final Fantasy 14 appears poised for substantial evolution. The initiatives aim to break free from predictable design patterns and revitalize the live-service experience for both veteran players and newcomers.
