Overwatch’s lackluster 10th anniversary event will have its rewards improved next week, with more free stuff planned for later this year

Overwatch’s 10th anniversary event has fallen short of player expectations. Rather than celebrating the milestone with meaningful rewards, the in-game event offers loot boxes containing old skins with new colorways and sprays, requiring extensive grinding to accumulate. The sparse rewards prompted significant player disappointment, particularly given the game’s massive catalog of cosmetics, many of which were previously limited-time offerings.

Players had hoped the anniversary event would provide an opportunity to earn rare or unavailable cosmetics that have been locked away since previous events or the transition from Overwatch 1. This expectation stemmed from Overwatch 1’s anniversary events, which had historically offered more substantial cosmetic rewards. Instead, the current event feels underwhelming for such a significant milestone.

Acknowledging the criticism, game director Aaron Keller responded to player feedback on X, confirming that Blizzard Entertainment plans to improve the event’s rewards next week. Beyond the immediate improvements, the studio has committed to releasing additional free content throughout the rest of 2026, signaling a broader effort to provide more substantial rewards and engagement incentives for the player base.

The response reflects the ongoing challenge live-service games face in balancing cosmetic monetization with meaningful rewards for dedicated players during major anniversaries and celebrations. For Overwatch players, the promise of improved rewards and future content may help salvage the 10th anniversary celebration.
