Sony Seems to Be Testing a New Feature That Reveals PS5 Player Counts to the Public
Sony is testing a new PlayStation 5 feature that will publicly reveal player counts for games on the platform. The feature, currently in beta and discovered by YouTuber Mystic, appears as a widget on the PS5’s Welcome Hub and displays regional data about the most-played games.
The widget includes two tracking options: a “Top 10” list showing the ten most-played games in the user’s country for the week, along with their weekly player counts, and a “Trending Now” section highlighting games experiencing surges in gameplay hours. Regional data varies, with US examples showing Fortnite at 14.6 million weekly players, GTA 5 at 5.13 million, Minecraft at 4.97 million, and Call of Duty at 4.95 million.
This represents a significant shift in PlayStation’s approach to player data transparency. While digital storefronts like Steam have long provided concurrent player numbers for most of their titles, PlayStation has historically kept such data private. The new widget marks Sony’s move toward greater transparency about its gaming ecosystem, making aggregate player count information available directly to users. The feature is currently limited to select beta testers and shows regional variations, meaning players will see different top-10 lists and player counts depending on their location. If rolled out broadly, this could influence how players discover games and understand community engagement across the platform.
